Crummy Mom Moment – I let Jeremy wet the bed :(

Published by under toddler

Last night Jeremy asked to pee in the potty before bed, so we went ahead and did that. He got to dump his pee, flush the toilet, wash up, and then he ran around heartily shaking hands with everyone (my brother and his g/f were visiting so Jeremy got to shake a lot of hands over his accomplishment.) BTW, this kid LOVES shaking hands like crazy, he grabs your hand firmly, holds your forearm with his opposite hand like a little politician, and heartily pumps your hand up and down with the full force of his arm and shoulder, LOL.

Anyway, after he went potty, he pulled up his pajama pants all by himself, which he has never done before (or even showed interest in before), so I was a little surprised. And of course, then he ran off to shake hands with everyone, so I never put a new diaper on him… and promptly forgot about it, since this was such an out-of-the-ordinary scenario for otherwise normal bedtime.

About 2:30 I heard Jeremy kind of groaning or whining in his bed – “Eh, ugh, eh…. Ughh….. Ehhh….” and I just thought he was moving around a little bit and would settle back down. Then I suddenly sat bolt upright with the realization that I had never put a diaper on Jeremy before he went to bed! He doesn’t sleep dry yet, and I just knew he must have wet the bed. :( Uggghhh, I could have kicked myself!!!

Anyway, I ran into his room, scooped him out of the soggy bed, and quickly put him into a dry diaper, whispering the whole time, “Oh I’m so sorry! I’m sorry Baby! I’m so sorry Baby!” (He didn’t seem too upset, I think he thought we were playing, because he sounded pretty smiley when he whispered back “I sowwy baby! I sowwy baby!”)

Since Jeremy’s bed and pajama pants were soaked, I just brought him back to our bed, and within an hour I realized why he doesn’t sleep with us anymore — he wants total silence, total stillness, and LOTS of personal space, sheesh. Every time Jon twitched or turned, I heard Jeremy’s serious little whisper admonishing “Shhh, Go Asleep, it’s NIGHT-TIME!” He also kept trying to push us out of his way so he could spread out and not be too hot, so finally Jon went down to sleep in the guest room, poor guy! At least we all got a little more space and Jeremy slept a lot better after that. He’s been like this since he was little – it used to bum me out a little bit because I like to snuggle with him, but then I realized that it’s more important to meet his individual needs than to just do what I want!

I will NEVER AGAIN forget to put a diaper on Jeremy before bed though. I’m just so glad he was generally a good sport about getting all wet and having to move to our crowded bed in the middle of the night.
